Studying in a new country can be an amazing experience. But it can also be overwhelming. There are new people, new practices and a new way of living to become accustomed with.
One of the most significant challenges that people abroad face, especially those living abroad for the first time, is homesickness.
However, don’t let homesickness prevent you from enjoying your exciting new travel experience. StudyAdelaide student ambassador, Suzy, shares a few of her ideas to help you overcome homesickness:
Fact – keeping busy in a new city will help take your mind off your homesickness.
Adelaide has plenty to do, like visiting shopping centres, going to markets, attending cultural festivals or going to the beach. Get your friends and go to lots of different places in and around Adelaide, and it should make you forget about your homesickness!
Try Local Food
Immerse yourself in the Adelaide market, café and restaurant scene. Half the fun is trying lots of different food. Once you have a few favourite ‘foodie’ places, and you know what to order, you will feel at home!
While it’s tempting (and comforting!) to eat familiar foods from home, make a point to taste allllll the cuisines.
Adelaide is home to a great selection of multicultural restaurants, so be present physically, mentally and most importantly – gastronomically!
Make New Friends
Making friends in Adelaide can be a great way to get involved in the local culture – and keep busy. Join a club or volunteer, both are excellent ways to meet more people especially the locals. They can introduce you to new places, help with the English language and recommend exciting things to do.
Do a little research about South Australia and find a few places you absolutely have to explore – the ten best coffee shops in the city, the many beautiful beaches, local street art locations or all the different places you can go hiking. The options are endless!
Make a list of these places or activities and challenge yourself to do/see all of them while you’re here. This will give you something fun to do and keep you focused on the next adventure.
Exploring Adelaide and beyond and being mentally present in where you are now is a great way to get over homesickness.
