The Adelaide BioMed city links over 600 researchers with industry and education to create the largest health and medical sciences precinct in the Southern Hemisphere.

Global health companies are choosing Adelaide as their destination for research and development due to significant incentives encouraging companies to develop new products and services. At the centre of the ecosystem is the Adelaide BioMed City which brings together research, education, clinical care and business development in one location.

In the precinct, the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) houses a team of more than 600 scientists working to solve some of the world’s most challenging health problems. SAHMRI is flanked by the new Royal Adelaide Hospital, the new The University of Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences Building, and the new University of South Australia Cancer Research Institute. An expansion of SAHMRI has just commenced which will see more than 10,000 researchers, health professional and students collaborating in across the precinct.

Medical device manufacturers are choosing the Tonsley Innovation District as a hi-tech manufacturing hub, which delivers a collaborative environment for start-ups, SMEs and global companies. Adelaide has also created a Living Laboratory, where companies capture the interactions of test subjects with products or services under controlled conditions. Global pharmaceutical manufacturers Pfizer and Mayne Pharma have established a presence in South Australia and have a 300-strong workforce.

All three state universities engage in collaborative research activities in health and medical sciences across the precincts, providing opportunities for future generations of top medical and research minds to learn, discover and innovate.
