Why did you choose to study in Adelaide?

I first heard about Adelaide when my sister decided that she would study here. We visited a lot when she was studying, which is when I fell in love with the city.

What do you love about living in Adelaide?

Growing up in a big, busy city, I got tired of all the noise and tall buildings. I wanted a change of scenery. I love the pace of Adelaide compared to my hometown, and also how vibrant it can be with its international festivals and smaller community events. It’s never too boring nor too busy — it’s just right.

The things I like best about Adelaide are the reliable public transport and how accessible everything is. When I get bored of the city I can easily hop on a bus and head for the Adelaide Hills or take a tram to the beach. The creative scene is also incredible here. Oh, and I can’t forget the greenery!

Do you have any favourite places to go or things to do in Adelaide?

In my spare time I enjoy shopping and going on walks around different neighbourhoods and discovering local cafés and parks. It hasn’t been too difficult for me to meet and mingle with other students. I attend regular social events held by my university and StudyAdelaide. I have a mixed group of friends. Some I have known since my college days in Malaysia, some I made here who are also international students and locals. I also have heaps of Muslim friends from Malaysia and Indonesia.

What advice would you give other Muslim students considering coming to Adelaide?

You may feel out of place at times, especially when mixing with students from different cultural backgrounds, but it’s important to remember that you deserve to have as much fun as they do! On a more practical note, I recommend joining Facebook groups for Muslim sisters in your area. It helps a lot with things like getting to know other Muslims and where to find your favourite foods. And finally I’d say just make the move, you’ll fall in love with Adelaide too.
