AJ Sanglay
Mabuhay!
I'm AJ from the Philippines. I’m currently pursuing my Master's degree in Information Technology at Flinders University.
I chose Adelaide because it immediately felt like a place where I could grow both personally and professionally. Adelaide has a friendly, relaxed vibe, and I’ve always felt supported here as an international student. A fun fact is that Adelaide was the first Australian city I ever visited, and within just a few days, I knew it was the right place for me to build my future.
Outside of my studies, I enjoy organising social events like BBQs and FiLoS events, exploring the city and its beautiful scenery, and spending time with my family and friends. Filipino food will always be my comfort, but Adelaide’s multicultural food scene has quickly become one of my favourite things about living here.
My advice for international students is don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Join events, meet people, and embrace the experience. Adelaide is full of friendly faces and supportive communities, and the more you get involved, the more this city will feel like home.
| Chuckie Cheng |
你好(nei5 hou2)! My name is Chuckie Cheng from Hong Kong. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours) at Adelaide University.
One of the reasons I chose Adelaide was because of its welcoming and supportive environment for international students. I first came to Adelaide as a high school student, and over time, the city has become a second home to me. I love that Adelaide is peaceful and easy to get around, while still offering many opportunities to meet new people and experience different cultures.
Outside of studying, I do not always have much free time, so I enjoy making the most of simple moments. When I get the chance, I like playing mahjong with friends, catching up on sleep after a busy week at university, and exploring places around Adelaide that make me feel more connected to the city.
My advice to other international students is to step out of your comfort zone and say yes to new opportunities. It can feel scary at first, but joining events, meeting new people, and getting involved in the community can make your journey in Adelaide more meaningful and memorable.

| Deona Alby |
Namaskaram!
I’m Deona, originally from Kerala, India.
A little about me: I’m a certified extrovert who loves a good chat! You'll often find me curled up with a good book and a hot chocolate during the rain. I also enjoy meeting new people, and if I’m not doing either of those, I’m probably under a blanket binge-watching a movie or series.
I’m currently in my final year of the Bachelor of Nursing at Adelaide University.
Why did I choose Adelaide? It felt like a city that was welcoming and easy to settle into. Do I still think that? Absolutely. Adelaide has a charm of its own- peaceful, comfortable, and filled with genuinely friendly people.
I moved here as an international student two years ago, and it has been quite the rollercoaster ride, with challenges and plenty of memorable experiences along the way.
To all the brave students studying away from home: make the most of every opportunity that comes your way. Keep an eye out for university programs and StudyAdelaide events- you never know where they might lead!
You’re already doing something incredibly courageous, so keep going- you’re doing great!
And if you ever spot me around Adelaide, come and say hello! I’d love to have a chat.
Until then, take care!

| Din Din Tahier |
Halo semua!
I’m Din Din, from Indonesia. I’m currently studying a Master of Social Work at Flinders University.
Why did I end up in Adelaide? I fell in love with Adelaide even before I visited, from a song by Indonesian singer Adhitia Sofyan titled Adelaide Sky. When I first listened to it, it was like the song was inviting me to go and live in Adelaide. Combined with one of my life goals, which is to pursue postgraduate study, here I am, living both of my dreams.
I love reading, exercising (going to the gym, jogging, hiking, walking), journaling, and many other things! I love music as well. My favourite genre is… nearly everything! But I enjoy rock, pop punk, emo, metal, and indie music the most. It actually depends on my mood.
I’m not a foodie, but I love potatoes so much. My favourite dish is Kentang Balado, Indonesian spicy potatoes. But you can give me chips and I won’t be able to stop eating! Particularly if they’re dipped in chilli sauce.
To my fellow international students, be happy, be kind, and just go out there! Do the things that you’ve always wanted to do. If you don’t have anyone to do those things with, you are your own best companion. Or you can hang out with me and the other ambassadors! Most importantly, don’t forget to be grateful. Lots of people want to be where you are now.
Enjoy Adelaide, guys!

| Jada Chow |
Hi and Apa khabar!
I’m Jada from Penang, Malaysia, and I’m currently doing a Bachelor of Biomedical and Health Sciences at Adelaide University!
Being from an island, I’ve always enjoyed a quieter life, and Adelaide helped me feel right at home. There is so much beauty all around, and any activity is fun when you’re exploring somewhere new.
I love spending my free time going on runs, exploring new cafes and taking a trip down to the beach. Whenever there’s an opportunity for me to go out of my house and take a break from studying, you’ll catch me being out and about!
To other international students: don’t be afraid of stepping out of your comfort zone! After all, you’ve already come so far, so make the most out of your time. Trust me, you won’t regret it, and one day you can look back on all the amazing memories you’ll create :)
If you ever need cafe recs or just someone to talk to, you know who to find!

| Janica Ofianga |
Maayong adlaw, everyone!
My name is Janica Marie Ofianga, and I am from the beautiful island of Bantayan in Cebu, Philippines. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Business, majoring in Accounting, at Kaplan Business School.
It was my sister who first fell in love with Adelaide when she visited. She suggested that I come here to study, and you know what? I wouldn’t change a thing! Adelaide offers a supportive environment for students like me.
The people are incredibly kind and welcoming, and the city’s relaxed pace makes it easier to balance studying, working, and enjoying life.
Outside of studying, I am passionate about beauty, fashion, communication, and organising events. I also enjoy listening to music, exploring new places, meeting people, and learning about different cultures.
My advice to international students is to go beyond your studies. Attend events, volunteer, meet new people, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. Stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to meaningful friendships, valuable opportunities, and unforgettable experiences.

| Joey Chew |
大家好!很高兴认识大家,请多指教!
My name is Joey, and I am originally from Malaysia. I am currently studying a Master of Teaching at Flinders University.
After completing a Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne in 2025, I chose Adelaide because it offered me the opportunity to experience a different educational context beyond a major metropolitan city and could broaden my perspectives as an emerging educator.
Outside of university, you will most likely find me grinding away at a CrossFit gym, spending most of my time convincing myself that the Echo Bike isn’t that bad (it always is).
One piece of advice I have for international students is this: don’t worry if you feel out of place at first. No matter what background you come from, there is something for you. Whether it is through a hobby, a community, your studies, or even just a random conversation, you will eventually find your people. As you embark on this journey, remember that you belong more than you think you do.

| Vi Tek |
Hi, Soursdey.
My name is Vi, and I’m from Cambodia. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Clinical Sciences/Doctor of Medicine at Flinders University in Adelaide.
One of the reasons I chose Adelaide is that it is a beautifully planned city that offers the best of both worlds. Within about 20 minutes, you can reach stunning beaches, world-famous wineries, or the Adelaide Hills. It combines a relaxed lifestyle, rich culture, and excellent educational opportunities, making it an ideal place to study and live.
Outside of university, I enjoy travelling, playing basketball and piano. I also love exploring the many weekly events happening around Adelaide, from cultural festivals and food markets to networking and community activities.
My advice for international students is to make the most of every opportunity available to you. One of my favourite apps is Eventbrite, where you can find countless events based on your interests. There are so many activities happening across Adelaide that it’s impossible to attend them all! While studying is important, remember to explore new places, meet new people, and create meaningful experiences. Travel when you can, say yes to new opportunities, and appreciate the people around you - they are often what make life truly beautiful!

| Mai Kanada |
Konnichiwa! I’m Mai from Nagoya, Japan. I’m currently studying a Master of Business Administration at Adelaide University.
Why did I choose Adelaide? A fun reason is that Adelaide is located at a similar latitude to my hometown. However, the real reason is that Adelaide is a well-balanced city with international diversity, beautiful nature, and great convenience. It feels like different parts of the world are brought together in one city. Adelaide also offers high-quality education in a safe and friendly environment, which makes it a perfect place for me to study.
I love exploring nature, travelling, and trying new things, especially new food and new places. Recently, I have been listening to songs by Fujii Kaze, a famous Japanese singer.
My advice for international students is to join StudyAdelaide events and connect with new people. These experiences can make your Adelaide life more meaningful and memorable. Let’s enjoy Adelaide life, learn from each other, and grow together!

Matthew Fortier

Hi everyone!
I’m Matt from Canada. I’m currently studying the Doctor of Medicine program at Flinders University. I chose to study in Adelaide as it had a good combination of activities, events, and hiking spots (just outside the city), but the Flinders campus specifically gave me the quiet, small community vibe I wanted during the hectic school year.
I enjoy being outdoors (the weather here is wonderful), playing ultimate frisbee or riding my motorcycle, and my favourite food is pizza! Some advice I’d give other international students is to look both ways before you cross the street (I may have tested my luck when I first arrived in Australia) and to arrive prepared with an adapter to charge your devices!
Lastly, get involved in your respective communities, go to all the events you can, and take the opportunity to potentially meet some lifelong friends. Being an international student can be an isolating experience to start, but I am sure you will settle in quickly. Hopefully, you enjoy Adelaide as much as I have!

Stephen Luong

|

Xin chào!
My name is Stephen, and I am from Vietnam.
I am currently a second-year student studying a Bachelor of Mathematics (Data Science) at Adelaide University.
I discovered that Adelaide is a welcoming, peaceful, and student-friendly city. I was drawn to its relaxed lifestyle and the opportunity to focus on my studies without the distractions of a larger city. Looking back, choosing Adelaide has been one of the best decisions I have made.
In my free time, I enjoy working on coding projects, especially those related to sports analytics. It may sound a little nerdy, but I love using data to uncover insights about teams and players. Outside of coding, I enjoy listening to rap music and cooking at home. As a proud Vietnamese, my favourite food is definitely pho - I could happily eat pho every day for an entire week!
My advice to other international students is to be confident and put yourself out there. No matter how fluent your English is, do not be afraid to start conversations and meet new people. Networking can open many doors and create lifelong friendships. Be prepared for challenges, but do not let them stop you from enjoying your experience. Adelaide has a lot to offer, so make the most of every opportunity and enjoy the journey.

Ay up, duck!
My name is Patric, and I’m from England.
I’m currently studying carpentry at TAFE SA. I enjoy hands-on, practical work where I can build and create things, and I like learning skills that I can see and use in the real world.
I chose to study in Adelaide because it offers a great balance between opportunity, lifestyle, and access to nature. It’s a place where it’s easy to stay active, meet people, and still have space to slow down when you need to.
In my spare time, I enjoy camping, bouldering, yoga, and playing Dungeons & Dragons. I like to stay active as I steadily make my way through all of the scrumptious cuisine here in Adelaide.
My advice to other international students is to find something you’re passionate about and not be afraid to involve other people in it. Shared activities are one of the easiest ways to build connections and start feeling at home in a new place.
Looking forward to meeting you all!

Ayubowan! I’m Risandu from Sri Lanka, currently studying Civil Engineering at Adelaide University.
One of the reasons I chose Adelaide was that my sister studied here and always spoke highly of both the city and the opportunities available for international students. After moving here myself, I quickly understood why. Adelaide offers a great balance between study, work, and lifestyle, while still feeling welcoming and easy to navigate.
When I’m not studying, I enjoy travelling and going on new adventures. Whether it’s exploring a new coffee shop, going on a random hike, taking a road trip, or experiencing something completely unfamiliar, I’m always looking for ways to make life a little more interesting.
My advice to other international students is simple. Experience as much as possible. University is important, but don’t spend all your time studying. Travel, meet new people, attend events, try new activities, and step outside your comfort zone. Some of the best opportunities and memories come from experiences you never planned for.
I look forward to meeting more students and hearing your stories!

안녕~ 반가워
Annyeong~ Bangawo
My name is Sumira, and I’m from South Korea. I’m currently in my first year of the Diploma of Nursing at TAFE SA.
My uncle, who spent many years living in Sydney, recommended Adelaide to me, describing it as a wonderful place to raise a family. I had actually lived here before, spending almost three years at Walkerville Primary School from Year 3 to Year 6. Those years gave me many fond memories, and they played a big part in my decision to return to Adelaide for my studies.
Outside of nursing, I enjoy a wide range of hobbies, including drawing, listening to music, skiing, horse riding, and golfing. One of my favourite things to do is go on long drives while listening to music. My favourite genres at the moment are indie, pop rock, classical, and R&B, but I genuinely enjoy listening to almost anything.
To my fellow international students, my biggest piece of advice is to take things one step at a time. Studying abroad can be challenging, and there may be times when it feels like everyone else is doing better than you in every way. But if you try to move faster than you can manage, you may end up overwhelming yourself.
Trust your own pace and keep moving forward. The challenges you face today will be the foundation for your future success. Believe in yourself and in the effort you're putting in. One day, you'll look back and realise that those difficult moments helped shape the person you've always wanted to become

Tahseen Taiyabah
|
|

স্বাগতম! I’m Tahseen, an international student from Bangladesh studying Advanced Computer Science at Adelaide University.
Since moving to Adelaide, I’ve somehow found myself involved in a little bit of everything. From student clubs, volunteering, advocacy to more student events than I can count!
I’m currently a StudyAdelaide Ambassador, AUSA Director, and President of the Bangladeshi Students Society- which basically means I really enjoy meeting people, getting involved, and helping students feel like they belong.
One of the reasons I chose Adelaide was because it felt like the perfect balance! A welcoming city with great education, vibrant spaces, and a strong student community. Outside of study and uni life, I love exploring new places, attending community events, and taking way too many photos of random pretty spaces.
My advice to international students is to say yes to new opportunities even if they feel a little scary!! Join events. Talk to people. Ask questions. And give yourself time to settle in. Adelaide can feel like home sooner than you think.
If you see me around then don’t be shy, come say hi! Till then, তোমার জন্য শুভকামনা রইল!

Tanya Valdez

|

Mabuhay! I am Tanya from the Philippines. I’m currently studying a Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy at Adelaide University.
What first drew me to Adelaide was the close distance to anywhere, from the city centre to the airport, beaches, and hills. I thought it would be awesome to take a break mid-week and go for beach walks or hikes, which seemed like the perfect de-stressor. At the same time, since I had lived in a busy metropolitan city for most of my life, I felt that a quieter, more laid-back, and peaceful city like Adelaide would be a welcome change.
These days, I really enjoy spending my free time listening to audiobooks, especially sci-fi and historical fiction, doing Pilates, playing board games, and trying new cafés with friends. I also like trying out new activities and sports, including bouldering and pickleball. Honestly, if I had more time, I would no doubt be trying everything.
My advice for other international students in Adelaide is to seize opportunities to meet new people and build meaningful connections. You never know where a conversation, invitation, or new experience might lead. Some of my most memorable experiences and valuable opportunities began with a simple yes.

大家好呀~ My name is Isabelle, and I am an international student here in Adelaide. I come from China, and I am currently studying optometry at Flinders University.
What I loved about Adelaide is that I was looking for some peace during my studies, and that is exactly what it gave me. This is a city you can settle into slowly, with calm mornings and lazy sunny afternoons spent with friends in good cafés, ending somewhere you didn't plan to go. There are always opportunities here to meet incredible people.
As for myself, I am an energetic person. I do not believe in predictability and routine. I enjoy the element of surprise, trying out different sports, exploring new cities, and meeting all kinds of people.
My advice for other international students is to be open to every opportunity and embrace all the possibilities available. Starting somewhere new can feel daunting, but trust the process, and the process will trust you back.

大家好!
My name is Felicia and I’m from China. I’m currently studying physiotherapy at Adelaide University.
I chose Adelaide because it felt like the perfect place to study health: calm enough to focus, welcoming enough to feel supported, and full of beautiful places to explore when I need a break. As someone studying physiotherapy, I also love how Adelaide encourages a balanced lifestyle, with beaches, parklands, walking trails and community activities close by.
Outside of study and placement, I enjoy staying active, trying new cafés and food spots, singing, hiking and spending time with friends. I also love discovering small, peaceful places around Adelaide where I can reset after a busy week.
My advice for other international students is to be brave and say yes to new experiences! It is normal to feel nervous at first, but every conversation, event and challenge helps you grow. Ask for help when you need it, connect with people, and give yourself time to find your rhythm. Adelaide can become a second home before you even realise it : )

Yong Yin Cheah
|
|

Hello! I am Yong Yin ( or “YY” if that’s easier), and I am from Singapore. I am currently studying a Master of Psychology (Clinical) at Flinders University.
Adelaide is a very good place to stay and study because it offers a great balance between the vibrant city areas and the quieter, beautiful suburbs. This mix has allowed me to enjoy peaceful moments whenever I want to unwind, while also giving me the opportunity to meet up with friends, explore beautiful places, and have fun whenever I want a more lively experience. I enjoy exploring new places, and Adelaide is perfect for that because there always seems to be another hidden gem waiting to be found.
For all incoming international students, I hope you will be open to trying new things, getting to know new people and cultures, and even discovering a new side of yourself. It can be scary to move to a new city where you don't know many people, but I can reassure you that the fearful voice in your head is often not true. It usually gets easier once you take the first step. Also, don’t forget to credit yourself because every attempt is worth celebrating, no matter how big or small.
Keep going! You’ve got this! And remember,
We'll be here to support you along the way :)

Yuto Konno
|
|

Konnichiwa (Hello)!
My name is Yuto, and I'm from Japan. I'm currently pursuing a Master of Information Technology at Flinders University.
I chose Adelaide because there was little to no information about this city available in Japanese! I've always enjoyed trying things that are a little different. Just like how I like to visit restaurants I've never been to before, I like to try new things. In fact, before coming here, I had visited almost every major Australian city except for Adelaide. I grew up in Tokyo, and I had always wondered what it would be like to live in a smaller city like Adelaide.
I enjoy challenging myself and trying new things. I've never been a particularly athletic person, but recently I've started going to the gym regularly. I'm also working on starting a new club and organising events at university. In general, I'm a very inquisitive person, and I love learning and exploring new experiences.
For fellow international students: you're not alone! Starting a new life overseas isn't easy, and it can be stressful at times. Stress is often viewed as something negative; however, I've learned to enjoy being in stressful situations. Personally, I've found that some of my greatest growth and most creative ideas come when I am in a stressful environment.
